Invite Connection and Conversation into your Living Room

How to place something, how to arrange things and knowing what works together is an art form. You might say that is something you either have or you don't. I don't agree with that. I would say either you have a desire or you don't. I believe strongly that most skills can be developed and how to put together a room is a skill. What is required like with everything else we want to learn is a desire to learn to understand and to study the experts and to practice and practice.

Our living rooms are (together with the kitchen table) the space in our homes where we interact the most. So often I see the classic layout with a sofa up against the wall, a coffee table and a TV on a bench opposite. I have a complete understanding of the importance of the TV in many people's lives but there are alternatives to furnish and arrange a living room.

Consider adding an armchair on an angle next to the sofa so that there is something else to sit on apart from the sofa.

The most important thing in a living room is that the sitting arrangement allows eye contact and conversation. So when it comes to arranging your living room think of these 3 things:

  1. Place sofas and armchairs so that interaction and conversation is possible with a radius of no more than 3 meters between the furthest away seats.
  2. Regardless of the layout make sure you give your sofa  some space - don’t push them up against the walls even 5-10 cm off the wall  will make a difference and it creates a feeling of spaciousness.
  3. Place things so that there is free passage in between. If pieces are too tight then the space will feel crowded.

Check out the free download of living room layouts that I apply in my client’s homes time and time again. I hope this inspires you to rearrange your furniture tonight.
